Nature of business: Greg sells and delivers hay. He got started because he lost his job with another business in the hay industry in 2006 and bought his own truck. It's a huge industry in California.

"I provide hay to some of the state's biggest dairies, as well on the Central Coast with premium hay for premium horses, racetracks, alpaca farmers, anybody who has the money to buy hay," says Greg.

Hay is very expensive right now; it's $300 a ton in the stack, and the typical customer buys anywhere from 12 to 25 stacks. Greg has customers who take a truckload every year or every month; some take three every week. Most of the hay comes from hay farmers in Northern California, mostly from a rancher named Travis Corder in Fall River Mills, in northeastern California's Shasta County.

California's agricultural industry contributes $31.4 billion to the state's gross domestic product, of which $1 billion comes from the hay industry.

Seventy-five percent of California's alfalfa (a form of hay) is trucked to the state's dairies. Out of the nine million tons of all hay produced in California, 75% of it goes to Tulare County dairies.
